What Essential Items to Pack to Record Videos on a Vacation

Are you planning a vacation and want to record lots of really impressive videos while you’re traveling? If so it is important that you also plan the gear that you’re going to pack, so that you’re able to make sure you have everything you need.

While there are lots of items that can help you to record better videos, it is best to focus on the most essential ones first so that your pack stays light. To be more specific you should pack the following gear:

  • Video camera

Unless you were planning to get a new camera, as a rule you should just use the one that you have. If you are buying a new camera or have several options, try to find one that is light and yet able to record high quality videos.

  • Tripod stand

A tripod stand can be really useful to help you keep the camera steady while you’re recording your videos. Nowadays there are many travel and portable tripods that are light, and can be folded up to make them easy to pack.

  • External microphone

While entirely optional, an external microphone will make a world of difference if you want to record (and keep) audio. In particular you can choose a portable shotgun microphone to record audio from a specific area, or a lavalier microphone if you want to record your own narration.

  • Spare batteries

Always make sure that you have spare batteries so that you don’t run out of power at any point during your vacation. The exact number that you’ll need will vary, but normally you’ll want at least two or three.

  • Additional storage

Recording lots of high quality videos will take up quite a bit of storage, so be sure to bring extra. Try to pack a few additional SD cards (or microSD cards) that you can swap into your camera when your storage fills up, and possibly an external hard drive so you can transfer out all the video footage at the end of the day.

  • Travel power adapter

Keep in mind that different countries use different power sockets, so you may need a power adapter of some kind. Nowadays there are lots of universal adapters that you can choose from.

Aside from the items listed above, having a tablet or laptop with you can be helpful as well so you can review the videos you record or even edit them. In some cases you may even want to convert them to more compressed formats, and for example you could convert MOV to MPEG using Online Video Converter.

Make no mistake there are other pieces of gear that may help in specific situations, such as reflectors, external video lights, or even protective gear to handle the elements. It is up to you to decide whether or not you need additional gear to cope with the circumstances that you may encounter on your vacation – and pack accordingly on a case by case basis.
